A Note from Saint Valentine - A First Person Tale of This Wonderful Day

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!

Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine." I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D.

Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they know that love can't be beaten!

We are moving our fellowship to another day of the month. As you all know, our previous fellowship day was every 2nd Monday of the month, but starting in February, we will be meeting on the 4th Mondays of the month. We still meet at 7:15 pm. That hasen't changed.

So...

We have some exciting topics this semester.

These classes are designed to assist you in your Christian growth and development, proivde you with a firm foundation, enhance your Biblical knowledge and strenghten your relationship with God and man.

Okay, so he's not President George Bush Jr, or the late Honorable President Ronald Reagan, but he's our man; Man of God, that is, and he gave us a State of the Union Address this evening (Tues. night at 7:00), that we will never forget.

It all took place in our executive conference room with a tremendous Powerpoint Presentation . . . "2005 was a good year for us," stated Pastor Watkins. The theme for 2005 was, God is going to blow your mind!"

And so, we began to take a look at all that we accomplished, with the help and strength of the Lord last year:

Praise and Worship Team, Administration Department, Church Logo, Launching of our Website, Single Adult Ministry (SAM), Women's Fellowship, Men's Fellowship, Marriage Masterpiece, Community Development (Darby Day and Thanksgiving Basket Drive), Hospitality Department, Visitor/Welcome Committee, New Member's Classes, Computer Technology Lab,  Sunday Morning Breakfast Program, Outreach (Men's Shelter) just to name a few . . .  Isn't this amazing? When the people of God work together, we can accomplish much!

Okay, we did have a few areas that we needed to improve on, but overall, 2005 was a great year.

Psychologists find that man is prevailingly and persistently "eye-minded." What this means is that he is more likely to think, imagine and remember in terms of vision. So, seeing what we were able to accomplish this past year , and seeing the goals and objectives for 2006, via the Powerpoint Point presentation allowed us to envision and focus on the goal.

The Bible gives instruction about presenting visions to the people. In Habakkuk 2:2, we read: "And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make [it] plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

Now that have the vision, the directions are clear, RUN . . .

In the Bible, there were some outstanding characters to whom visions were vouchsafed in the history of Israel—Abraham, Moses, Jacob, David, Isaiah, Jesus and Paul—were all men of action as well as sentiment, and it is manifest from any fair reading of their lives that their work was helped and not hindered by this aspect of their fellowship with God.

Tonight, our vision was written out and presented to us by Pastor Watkins in a more modern fashion . . .  Powerpoint Presentation, but God gave our Man of God, the vision for his life and for the ministry which he has been entrusted to.

Vision is Caught, not Taught!

Have you Caught the vision of our leader?

Are you willing to trust his leading?

Do you believe what he's saying?

So, what about 2006? "We are going to do exploits this year, in the Spirit of Excellence", said Pastor Watkins.

Pastor Watkins declares that 2006 is the year of the Youth and Evangelism. Our goal is to reach as many young people and their families, in our community as possible. 

 "Salvation Is Serious", that's our theme for 2006.

Let's get 100% behind our leader and help the vision come to past!  We can do it!

We have made some very important changes to our order of services. We ask that you take note of these changes and govern yourselves accordingly.

We had our first Thanksgiving Basket Drive and it was a great success, thanks be unto God.

On November 22, 2005 our Community Outreach team prepared 10 Thanksgiving baskets and gave individual turkeys away to a few families in our community and our church members.

We started the preparations around 8:00am and we worked until 6:15pm. The Penn Wood West Jr. High School in Darby, PA partnered with us to ensure that we were able to reach those families that could use a helping hand this year.

Giving is characteristic of Christ Jesus, who gave His life for us. And now, we are to lay down our lives, and not only our lives, but give our time, talent, and treasure, for the upbuilding of God's Kingdon and for others.

Special thanks to

Minister Luther Young who donated 10 turkeys

Lashawn Reddy, the manager of ShopRite Supermarket on Island Avenue, who donated 5 turkeys

Sister Angell Williams who worked eagerly beside me

Elder Benjamin Fisher, who devoted his time to serving the people in our community

Sister Campbell who gave generously

Penn Wood West Jr. High School who helped us locate families that could use a helping hand this year

GRRC church members that donated the food items during our Thanksgiving drive. 

 Pastor Quincy M. Watkins and First Lady Watkins for their blessings and support of our Community Outreach endeavors.

We look forward to serving our community again.

Ok, if you were not there you really missed it! On, Monday, November 21st. we surprised Pastor Watkins with a fabulous dinner party. The menu was spaghetti and meatballs (hold the mushrooms please, our Pastor don't eat those), garlic bread, party wings, tossed salad, sparkling cider, and a beautiful birthday cake with Pastor's photo on it.  Yeah, that's the one.

Now get this, we played our own version of JEOPARDY... HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEOPARDY, and we had the real JEOPARDY music too! Aaron Qubeck, not sure if spelled correct, was our game show host. He was a riot. All the questions were about Pastor Watkins. Did you know that Pastor weighed 7lbs. 18oz at birth? Bet you didn't. Did you know his favorite color is Blue? Yeah, you probably knew that one. 

Next, Sister Brenda Simmons did a centerpiece give away and those particular set of questions were about Pastor Watkins famous sayings, greetings, closing, encouraging words, etc. Oh, did I mention the party blowers, horns.

Angell Williams and I went crazy with those horns. We blew them quite often, and I know we hit a few nerves... All in love though. Don't get it twisted!

Like I said, if you were not there, you really missed a good time. But, you still have an opportunity to participate on Sunday, November 27th. when we continue to honor our man of God with some awesome presentations and lots of love.
